LCD TV shipments in Europe up 124% YTY in May 2006 with FIFA World Cup boosting demand

LCD TV panel unit shipments continued to increase despite inventory concerns in Europe, rising 2% month to month and 124% YTY to 3.5 mln units. LCD panel suppliers have switched from air-based shipments in April targeting World Cup demand to sea-based transportation in May targeting Q3 2006 demand. On an area basis, shipments increased 1% month to month and 208% YTY to 872K month to month. The 30″ and larger share rose from 51% to 59%. Samsung led in both LCD TV panel unit and areal shipments with unit shipments up 11% month to month and 167% YTY, DisplaySearch reports.
32″ 1366 x 768 continued to enjoy the highest share with a 35.9% share of unit shipments, up 2.3% from the previous month. Notebook PC panel unit shipments increased 4% month to month and 41% YTY to 5.6M units after a weak April. On an area basis, shipments increased 2% month to month and 37% YTY to 359K month to month. LG.Philips LCD retook the #1 spot with 1.5 mln units, up 11% month to month and 55% YTY. 15.4″ 1280 x 800 continued to lead with 33.5% of unit shipments, down 4.4% from April.
