US online ad spending to double by 2012

US online advertising spending will nearly double by the year 2012, with search and display advertising accounting for the lion’s share of expenditures. JupiterResearch projects total online advertising spending will increase from $19.9 bln in 2007 to $35.4 bln in 2012.

Wireless data revenues to grow at 36% a year

Wireless data revenue will grow at a 36% compound annual rate, TIA says. Wireless revenue passed landline revenue internationally in 2006 and will be 59% greater by 2010. Wireless customers outside the United States will increase by 975 mln people by 2010, when the wireless total will reach 3.13 bln. Wireless customers in the United States will total 270 mln in 2010, up from 216 mln in 2006 and 135 mln just five years earlier. Wireless customers in the Asia/Pacific region totaled 963 mln at the end of 2006 and are expected to total 1.58 bln by 2010 ? more than twice the number expected to be in Europe by then.

Mobile gaming in Asia-Pacific to reach $18.8 bln by 2011

In EMEA, penetration of newer handsets with Internet access capabilities will facilitate the growth of wireless gaming. Asia/Pacific, the largest market, at $11.7 bln in 2006, is projected to maintain its leadership through 2011, reaching $18.8 bln, growing by 10% CAGR, PriceWaterhouseCooper said.

US IP communications market to grow to $30 bln by 2007

The total US IP communications and managed services opportunity (including managed IP-PBX, managed security, managed backup/business continuity, managed networks, VPNs and web hosting in the US SMB space) is estimated to be over $30 bln for 2007 and will grow at a CAGR of 15.6% out to 2010, AMI Partners says. Over 10% of US SMBs now use a managed firewall service and over 15% are using managed VPNs. The opportunity for online/off-site data storage and backup is also increasing, driven by business continuity and disaster recovery needs, and has risen to 11% among SBs and 15% among MBs.

$78.4 bln to be spent on Internet ads in the US in 2011

Internet ad spending in the United States will total $78.4 bln in 2011, up from $47.2 bln in 2006, averaging 10.7% CAGR. In EMEA, rising broadband penetration will drive internet advertising. In Asia Pacific, government initiatives will boost broadband subscribership and eventually lead to a decline in dial-up. Latin America will increase from $6.0 bln in 2006 to $12.2 bln in 2011, a 15.1% CAGR, PriceWaterhouseCooper said.

87% of Americans to have wireless subscriptions

Entertainment is driving the wireless market through demands for broadband applications such as multimedia and data services, with wireless use expected to rise to 270 mln people, or 87% of the US population, by 2010, according to TIA. Outside the United States, wireless transport services alone totaled $560 bln in 2006 and are projected to total $887 bln in 2010.

3 bln mobile subscriptions by July 2007

Mobile phone subscriptions will pass the 3 bln mark in July 2007 and exceed 3.25 bln by the end of 2007, according to The Mobile World. The world’s population is forecast to hit around 6.6 bln in July 2007.

Global PC market to grow 11.1% in 2007

Worldwide PC shipments are projected to rise 11.1% in 2007, according Gartner. PC shipments are estimated to increase to 257.1 mln from 231.5 mln a year earlier as sales in emerging markets grow. Gartner expects emerging markets to gain about 128 mln new PC users in 2007 and 2008, representing about 25% of all PC units expected to be shipped. Laptops and desktop sales are expected to be 103.2 mln and 153.9 mln in 2007.

55% of US organizations plan to buy network access control solutions

55% of US organizations plan to buy in-line network access control solutions, and another 11% aren’t sure if they’ll buy in-line or out of band. 80% of large organizations interviewed plan to enforce NAC in the network, and 51% plan to enforce at the client (some do both). Of the respondents interviewed who plan to deploy NAC by 2008, 32% have already deployed NAC. The need to demonstrate policy or regulatory compliance (64% and 54% respectively) is up as a driver for deploying NAC compared to in 2006, Infonetics says.

EMEA satellite radio subscriptions to generate $30.1 bln in 2011

Growing exposure in automobiles and the appeal of multiple formats will drive satellite radio subscriptions and fuel advertising on satellite platforms in the US. EMEA is expected to rise from $24.9 bln in 2006 to $30.1 bln in 2011, a 3.8% CAGR, PriceWaterhouseCooper said.

72% of online Americans listen to music on their PCs

72% of online adults in the US are using their home computers to listen to audio content, according to Consumer Electronics Association. Рapid penetration of the PC in US households (now estimated at 82%) has more and more consumers looking to their home computer instead of their TV, DVD player or CD player for a home audio experience. 86% of home PC audio users are satisfied with their computer-sourced audio experience. However, more than one-third of home PC audio users cite the need for better sound quality. When forced to choose between having a quality audio experience and owning a large number of audio files, almost half (47%) of home PC audio users chose quality over quantity. 77% of home PC audio users listen to music on their PC an average of nine hours per week. While physical media remains the primary source of audio content among overall home PC audio users, the Internet and digital files also represent significant sources of content. 9% of home PC audio users currently connect their PC to their home audio systems.

Asia Pacific music market to generate $12.2 bln in 2011

In the US, new mobile music services and the surging popularity of ring backs will fuel digital distribution to mobile phones. Asia Pacific will be the fastest growing region in music business, advancing at a 5.4% CAGR to $12.2 bln in 2011 from $9.3 bln in 2006. Asia Pacific will pass the United States in 2008 to become the second largest region, PriceWaterhouseCooper said.

35% of online game ads to display on console games by 2012

North America is the largest market for online game advertising. By 2012, video game console systems are expected to account for 35% of online game advertising revenue in North America. Japan is the fastest growing market for online game subscription revenue. East Asia is the leading market for virtual item sales and is expected to continue to be the leading market for digital distribution in 2012. However, between 2006 and 2012, Europe is expected to be the fastest growing market for digital distribution and virtual item models, DFC Intelligence says.

21 mln touch screens to ship by 2012

Shipments of touch screens are projected to jump from fewer than 200,000 units in 2006 to more than 21 mln units by 2012, with the bulk of the components going to mobile phones, according to iSuppli Corp.

40% of MySpace users use other social networks

40% percent of MySpace users keep profiles on other social networking sites such as Friendster and Facebook. Loyalty among the smaller social networking sites is even lower, with more than 50% of all users actively maintaining multiple profiles, Parks Associates says.

US television market to generate $85.4 bln in 2011

The US will remain the largest television market, expanding from $62.2 bln in 2006 to $85.4 bln in 2011; at a 6.5% CAGR. Latin America will be the fastest growing market, rising to $12.1 bln in 2011 from $7.9 bln in 2006, an 8.8% CAGR. In Canada, high-definition television will help sustain broadcast viewing and advertising, but losses related to distant signal retransmission will continue to cut into growth, PriceWaterhouseCooper said.
